Dindoshi police have arrested two brothers on charges of kidnapping a 22-year-old call center employee working for a multinational private bank and embezzling money.
The duo is accused of kidnapping and extorting money by pretending to be a Mumbai Crime Branch police officer. The incident happened on Saturday night.
According to police sources, the duo abducted the 22-year-old complainant from IT Park area in Goregaon East. They brutally beat the employee and then took him to Andheri and forcibly withdrew Rs 2,000 from the complainant’s account on Saturday night. The duo later released the 22-year-old and threatened serious consequences if he did not pay Rs 10,000 by Monday.
After the release, a resident of Nalasopara rushed to Dindoshi police station and lodged a complaint, an official said.
As soon as the complaint was received, the team under the guidance of DCP Zone XII, Somnath Gharge, Senior Inspector Jeevan Thorat and API Chandrakant Gharge started investigation. They reviewed the CCTV footage of the area and managed to get the number plate of the accused’s car. After getting more information from the RTO, the investigation team traced the accused and arrested them on Sunday.
The arrested have been identified as Harish Sanappa Gaikwad (27) and Chandrakant Gaikwad (32, both of Malad West). During the investigation, it was found that the complainant was working in the call center of a multinational bank in Dindoshi. The Gaikwad brothers also belong to this bank and they often went to the branch for their work.
Both of them were found to be making money through corruption. So they plotted to extort money from the 22-year-old. On Saturday night, they stopped him outside his office and introduced him as a police officer. They forced him into a car, beat him up and demanded Rs 10,000. The complainant did not have that much money, after which the duo forced him to withdraw Rs 2,000 from the ATM.
“We have registered a case under the relevant section of the IPC and arrested the two from Malad West on Sunday. He was produced in court and remanded in judicial custody, “said API Chandrakant Gharge.
