Kiran Bedi was born on June 9, 1949 in Amritsar. She is an Indian social worker, former tennis player and politician. She became the first woman in India to join the Indian Police Service [IPS] in 1972 and was the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Puddachiri. May 28, 2016 to February 16, 2021. She served for 35 years before retiring voluntarily as Director General of the Bureau of Research and Development in 2007.

As a teenager, Bedi was named National Junior Tennis Champion in 1966. Between 1965 and 1978, she won several national and state championships. After joining IPS, Bedi served in Delhi, Goa, Chandigarh and Mizoram.
