   A 20-year-old student from South Mumbai boarded a local train from Prabhadevi station for Churchgate at 5.30 pm on Monday. She was traveling in a women's compartment with three passengers. While she was sitting by the window, a man at Charney Road station got into the locomotive and sat in front of her.
Pappu Gupta, a resident of Goregaon, got up in a short time and sat next to the girl. As soon as the man grabbed her bag, the frightened young woman got up and went to stand by the door. After this the person said to her, 'Sit down, sit down ... where are you going?'
Still the young woman got up from her seat and stood next to the female companion near the door. Gupta followed her and stood beside her. The frightened female passenger and two others started fleeing. Gupta then tried to push the student out of the train, but failed. He then started pulling the girl's hair.
The student collapsed in the struggle. Gupta then sat on her body and started biting her nose and lips.Bleeding heavily and in pain, the young woman grabbed the accused's head and crashed into an iron rod near the door. Seeing all this, a female passenger pulled the chain of the train.
As soon as the train stopped, Gupta took the girl's bag and mobile phone and jumped out of the train. However, the passengers in the next coach, hearing the young woman screaming for help, jumped out of the train and started chasing her. But while running on the tracks, Gupta started throwing stones at the people running after him.
Gupta was eventually apprehended by passengers and beaten before being handed over to the Churchgate GRP. Police have registered a case against him under various sections of the IPC. The woman asserted that her confession had been obtained through torture. Senior Inspector Vijay Tayde said, "The motive behind the man's action is important. It was just to rob the woman and we have recorded her answer. "
